{"id":2325,"date":"2021-08-27T19:19:36","date_gmt":"2021-08-27T17:19:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/wasp-trap-for-the-apiary-here-comes-sfera-trap-with-protein-bait\/"},"modified":"2022-08-09T18:46:06","modified_gmt":"2022-08-09T16:46:06","slug":"wasp-trap-for-apiary-with-protein-bait","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/en\/wasp-trap-for-apiary-with-protein-bait\/","title":{"rendered":"WASP TRAP FOR THE APIARY: HERE COMES SFERA TRAP WITH PROTEIN BAIT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the last 5 years two particular\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/en\/type-of-insect\/wasps-and-hornets\">traps for wasps and hornets<\/a>\u00a0have proved the most effective at trapping:\u00a0<strong>Tap Trap<\/strong>\u00a0with beer baits, to be used in spring for catching wasp queens, and\u00a0<strong>Sfera Trap<\/strong>\u00a0with protein baits, to be used in apiaries during summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this article we explain the working of Sfera Trap: the first glue trap that is <strong>placed directly in apiaries<\/strong>\u00a0to defend bees from predators such as Vespa crabro and Vespa velutina.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">WHY A <em>PROTEIN BASED<\/em> WASP TRAP<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the summer, the eggs laid by the hornet queen hatch. To feed the larvae, the hornet workers go hunting for protein rich food and bring it to the nest: this food includes bees, along with various other types of insects. Its main attraction is the bright yellow color. The capture of hornets occurs via the glue spread on the surface of the trap before placing it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To catch hornets and wasps in apiaries, the wasp-trap Sfera Trap must be used with a protein bait placed directly on the surface of the sphere (in our tests, the salmon flavoured cat food proved to be the most effective bait). The trap prepared in this way must be placed in strategic places between beehives: wasps and hornets, attracted by the scent of the protein bait, approach the trap to eat the food and remain trapped on the glue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Here\u2019s how to prepare the trap.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><b>How to prepare the wasp trap Sfera Trap for the apiary<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sfera Trap is composed of two hemispheres that must be assembled to form a sphere of 25 cm in diameter, equipped with a latching ring for hanging, and with an internal LED light: this must never be used when using Sfera Trap to defend the apiary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Instructions<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Assemble the two hemispheres<\/strong>\u00a0without placing the LED light inside.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Wrap the trap<\/strong>\u00a0with transparent plastic film that must be adherent to the surface: we recommend using reels of plastic packaging film, easily available in hardware stores, as shown in the picture below.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Hang the trap<\/strong> on a mobile support to facilitate the transport, such as a vegetable box with a plastic tube (<em>see recommendations at the bottom of this article<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Spray a glue<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>for insect<\/strong> on the trap. Other types of non sprayable glue can also be used (<em>see recommendations<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Add salmon\u00a0pat\u00e9 for cats<\/strong>\u00a0(easily available in supermarket stores).<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Place the trap<\/strong> in apiaries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2031\" style=\"font-style: inherit; Photo: an apiary\u00a0in Latte (IM) &#8211; Italy<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"text-align-center\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>\u2756 \u2756\u00a0\u00a0<u>I M P O R T A N T <\/u>\u00a0 \u2756 \u2756<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To avoid the risk of the bees being trapped, it is extremely important that you never place Sfera Trap in front of beehives<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How to use Sfera Trap <em>in apiaries<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sfera Trap for apiaries should always be used\u00a0<strong>without its internal light<\/strong>: its nocturnal brightness\u00a0would otherwise put bees at risk.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The trap should be moved away from the proximity of beehives whenever it is necessary to open them or to perform any type of operation on them.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">To move Sfera Trap easily, we advise to build a mobile support &#8211; Photo: capture of Asian hornets in apiary \u00a9 Roberto Carello<\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>WHY USING SFERA TRAP<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong>\u00a0it can be used directly in apiaries, in the period in which the damage caused by the hornets and Vespa velutina is most substantial: the use of the protein bait is essential for the trap to be effective in reducing the pressure of these predators in front of beehives.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong> it is practical: the cling film upon which the glue and the bait is placed can be easily replaced, and the plastic surface of the trap itself does not need to get dirty.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong>\u00a0it is versatile and can also be used for catching\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/en\/sfera-trap-against-flies-infestations\">other types of harmful insects<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong>\u00a0it is reusable for many seasons.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong> it can hang from a mobile support and can be moved when and where you need it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because <\/strong>it allows us to count the hornets it captures.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Because<\/strong>\u00a0the strength of its attractant qualities is increased by the hornets it captures: this happens when, in the persistent attempt to free themselves from the glue, the hornets emit a substance that is strongly attractive to other hornets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe title=\"Protein TRAP for VELUTINA - Sfera Trap\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4_YBzd4czYY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 9pt;\">Very successful trials of Sfera Trap were carried out in Western Liguria, the part of Italy that has been particularly hit by\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_hornet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Asian hornet<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>HELPFUL TIPS<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suitable entomological glue range from sprayable glue (the most practical of all), to tube mouse glue, and brush glue.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sprayable glue is the most recommended: in case of loss of adhesion, it will be easy to spray some other glue and reposition the trap, without necessarily replacing the transparent plastic.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The cling film cover can be easily removed with a knife, as shown in this <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OoePAoPWs1I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short video guide<\/a>\u00a0(with English subtitles), and can be replaced whenever you need it.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">The building of a mobile support is strongly recommended &#8211; with a vegetable box and a plastic tube for instance; this way it will also be easier to collect the captured specimens that fall from the trap, thus avoiding contamination of the apiary ground with the glue that inevitably remains stuck to the insects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hornets and wasps after the summer period<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the summer season ends, crabro wasps (European hornet) and velutina wasps (Asian hornet) no longer need protein food: what attracts them are once again the sweetest substances.\u00a0Therefore, in that period and until the onset of the winter, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/en\/vespa-velutina-bio-traps-work\">ideal wasp-trap<\/a>\u00a0to use are the ones with a beer-only bait or a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.taptrap.com\/en\/trap\/tap-trap\">bittersweet bait<\/a>.
