In order to eliminate wasps and hornets without using insecticides, it is necessary to know their habits and behaviour: attracting this predator into traps is not difficult if one knows, for example, the time of year when the colony founding queens go in search of food, or what type of substance attracts them most. All types of vespids have similar behaviour and knowing them allows us to deploy the most effective means of defence.

Knowing wasps to prevent infestations

The behaviour of queens is the first thing to observe: they are founders of new colonies and are around from the first, less cold days of late winter. Those that survive the cold season and are already fertilised go in search of suitable places to build a new nest. It goes without saying that from a defensive point of view, the fewer nests we have, the fewer wasps will be in circulation when we have ripe fruit on the trees.  Another aspect to consider is the behaviour of wasps during the various seasons of the year: this species tends to prefer protein food during the hottest months of the year, which is why it hunts bees with serious consequences for beekeeping and the balance of biodiversity. Another important factor to consider is where they have made their nests: if we find one in the roller blind of the house window, trapping will not be of much use, not even in areas rich in greenery such as houses with gardens. In such cases, it is best to contact a pest control service.

Below you will find a number of articles on defence techniques based on insect behaviour. In the insect cards, on the other hand, you can learn more about seasonality, behaviour and life cycle.

TRAPS FOR WASPS AND HORNETS

The wasp and hornet traps we recommend are of three types: Tap Trap and Vaso Trap recycle everyday containers such as plastic water bottles and honey jars as containers for a do-it-yourself food bait that is very attractive to hornets and wasps. Sfera Trap, on the other hand, is a glue trap that is very versatile in its use: in fact, it can be used as a protein trap for hornets and wasps velutina directly in the apiary, or it can catch mosquitoes, flies and horseflies if hung in vegetable gardens, yards, porches or orchards. Cliccando su ogni trappola troverai le ricette per preparare le esche e la modalità di utilizzo.
